Fire Island Dance Festival

It was my privilege to donate a decade to photographing several components of the important, highly effective organization, Dancers Responding to AIDS, DRA. The one constant in my assignments was an annual ferry ride that landed at the Fire Island Pines dock, the third weekend of each July. No cars in sight, just homes that glowed from within at night, wooden board walks, and also free-roaming deer. It is every bit as magical as you may have heard. The annual DRA Festival is much anticipated, and the entire island joins in the celebration. Everyone involved donates their time and talent with the end goal being to raise as much money as possible for their cause, non-profit AIDS fundraising. The performances, over a temporary stage constructed upon a private swimming pool, no wings, only the open Great South Bay behind them, as a natural, ever-changing backdrop. The setting is nothing short of spectacular! And the performances are as well.

I have curated a tight edit of many of the dancers and groups that I photographed over my time with DRA, at the FIDF. What I hope to convey is the relaxed atmosphere, the camaraderie ever-present, behind the scenes, rehearsals, corrections, performances and even icing an ankle—which doesn’t feel so bad in July heat!

I hope that you’ll enjoy the experience and aim to be there to witness it yourself live one day!
